De quote van Henry Ford “Whether you believe you can do a thing or not, you are right’ is een mooie illustratie van hoe onze overtuigingen bepalen wat we wel of niet kunnen.
Oprah & Deepak’s newest 21-Day Meditation Experience: Become What You Believe
A belief system is a structured process by which we evaluate everything in our lives. Our personal belief system determines how we interpret the world according to our observations and experiences.
“Whether you believe you can do a thing or not, you are right.”
The beliefs that you hold influence your thinking; and if your thoughts are can or can’t, either of them will become your reality.
The question is, what kind of beliefs do you have that have led you to where you are in life?
Originally launched in 2013, with now over 4.1 million participants, Oprah Winfrey and Deepak Chopra have announced the ninth, and newest, “Oprah & Deepak 21-Day Meditation Experience” entitled “Become What You Believe.”
Embracing the themes of connection and meaning in the world, this free 21-Day Meditation Experience will begin on Monday, November 2nd, and is now open for registration at Oprah.com/meditation.
With meditations voiced by Oprah Winfrey and Deepak Chopra, participants will discover the keys to understanding who they are today, and open the door to who they want to become. Paralleled with thought-provoking reflective questions, this meditation series will assist you to look at the world in a different way and open your mind to receive new insights and considerations.
In an exclusive interview Deepak Chopra, a pioneer in integrative medicine and global and personal transformation, discusses the expansive benefits of examining your beliefs through meditation:
BJB: The “Become What You Believe” Meditation event is the ninth installment in a series of meditations you’ve done with Ms. Winfrey. Is the format that participants log on as a group at the same time for the audio meditation each day? Or at your own leisure?
DC: “The participants will get an email every day and can log on at their own convenience and click on the meditation when they want to.”
BJB: What distinguishes this series from the others and what is your highest intention for this meditation experience?
DC: “With all the meditations there are themes, so with this particular meditation it is tied with Oprah’s “Belief” documentary.”
“The basic understanding is that your beliefs about yourself are reflected in the outer world, in your relationships, in your circumstances and events in your life, which mirror your beliefs about yourself. Those people who have a belief in a higher intelligence, or a bigger mystery, and see themselves as a part of greater being, have a perception of themselves and the world that is quite different. As somebody who studies the science of this, it is known that our beliefs shape our perception of the world, but they also shape our knowing of the world. They actually structure the connections between neurons in our brain that allow us only to see who or what we believe in. So when people say, “Seeing is believing,” it’s actually the other way around. Believing is seeing.”
BJB: You have been quoted as saying, “When we embrace our most positive beliefs, we can reach our highest potential.” Why do you think many people linger around negative beliefs when there is proof around the benefits of positive beliefs?
DC: “Normally our beliefs are shaped in our childhood. The people we’re surrounded by such as our caretakers, our parents, and the environment that we’re brought up in, shapes the belief structure of a child and that goes on to the perceptions and doings of adulthood. Most of our beliefs come from our conditioned mind and it was conditioned before we had any choice. That’s why it’s difficult for people to change their beliefs.”
“Recent research has actually shown that the only way to change these beliefs, the negative beliefs that people have about life and about themselves, is to engage meditation or do some reflective self-inquiry in which you ask yourself why you believe something and why do you think it’s true. The more you question your limiting beliefs, the more you realize that they’re just ideas that were programmed into your mind when you were a child.”
“Once you become aware of this you are able to shift to a higher level of awareness.”
BJB: Considering that limiting and self-sabotaging beliefs contribute to a lack of self-worth and self-love, how does meditation re-condition the body and mind to re-claim self-worth?
DC: “Meditation takes you to a level of awareness which is beyond the mind. So even though some people say, “You know I never find that my meditations quiet my noisy mind. I have too many thoughts.” The fact is, in every meditation there are little gaps where your awareness goes to a level which is beyond the mind because you are connected to core consciousness. At that level you kind of wash off some of the conditioning. So the more people practice meditation, the more they realize that they don’t have to be bound by the hypnosis of social conditioning by society, by media, advertising and economics, history, culture and so on.”
BJB: So it helps you release your attachment to limitation?
DC: “It helps you to release your attachment, but it also is a form of stress release. People shouldn’t complain of having too many thoughts because what is happening is you’re cleansing your mind.”
BJB: The documentary series “Belief” will share vastly different beliefs held by people around the world. Knowing that we’re all here for a reason and that there is divine purpose for our differences, what is the one belief that is pivotal for all of us to embrace in order to uplift the collective consciousness of society?
DC: “I think the one belief that we all need to embrace is one that is based on a good understanding of awareness that at the source of our perception, we are all intricately one. There are two intentions in this world that are the most important: service and love. If you act from that place the possibilities for your life are endless.”
According to Dr. Chopra, “The state of contracted awareness is the enemy of finding a solution to a crisis. Real solutions to a crisis come from expanded awareness, where the inner feeling is no longer tight and fearful.”
When I first began to meditate, I was at a point in my life when I was desperate for someone, something, anything to save me from my (perceived) problems. I remember thinking, ‘Maybe if I meditate for a few weeks, all of my problems will just go away.’ As I lingered amongst the perception of myself as a victim, I was in a perpetual state of “contracted awareness” and my own biggest impediment to growth.
Opening up Your Awareness of Belief is the goal of week one of the meditation series, and will focus on expanding the awareness of your beliefs and how belief made you the person you are today.
Despite the initial difficulty, I continued to meditate. Each night it became a little easier for me to observe the negative patterns in my beliefs, while simultaneously experiencing brief moments of silence.
At this point you are able to recognize the hidden beliefs that hold you back. Here you can begin to Embrace and Transform Your Beliefs in an effort to find your true identity and re-claim your personal power. This is the focus of week two.
Over the course of the meditation series, you will begin to notice that you are quieter on the inside. There is less mental chatter, worry and having nonsensical internal conversations with yourself over how you will attempt to control (yet another) outcome.
Knowing that “no problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it,” it is vital to recognize that our individual, and collective experience of any challenge or situation is influenced by our perception of it.
With consistent meditation you become sensitive to the signposts that lead to the inevitable “soul-utions” to problems, and answers can begin to present themselves in ways you had not considered.
Reflecting on Dr. Chopra’s belief of the two most important intentions in this world being service and love, expanding our individual awareness tethers out to the collective awareness. This is the focus of week three,Uniting the World through Belief.
“When we embrace our most positive beliefs, we can reach our highest potential, and we help heal the separation in humanity through the power of shared belief,” says Dr. Chopra.
“When we share our beliefs with others, we experience the truth that we are more alike than we are different. When we accept and embrace this truth, we replace our “us versus them” mentality with “we are one.””
“Change your beliefs, change your life,” cannot be emphasized enough.
“The quest for meaning and the desire to answer some of life’s most thought-provoking questions is the common thread that connects us as human beings,” says Oprah Winfrey. “Opening ourselves up to belief, however that manifests itself, can help provide us with meaning and lead us down a path to a more fulfilling life.”
With this series, Ms. Winfrey reminds us, “What you believe has more power than what you dream or wish or hope for.”
As consciousness is designed to lead to solutions, you are being invited to connect with a greater consciousness to prepare yourself for transformation, to see with new eyes, to grow with fluidity and to ultimately ask, “Who will become if I am divine?”
